In many European societies, including Bulgaria, democratic life is marked by low trust, weak participation, and unresolved engagement with the recent past. Sofia Platform Foundation works within this context, focusing on civic education, historical memory, and practical forms of participation that strengthen democratic culture over time.

 

Our strategy for the period 2025–2030 sets out our goals, priorities, and approach to sustainable development. It builds on more than ten years of practical experience and long-term partnerships with educators, institutions, and diverse communities.

As part of Strategy 2030, FACADE brings together Sofia Platform Foundation’s long-term work on historical memory, critical thinking and civic participation. 

FACADE is an initiative of the Sofia Platform Foundation to create Bulgaria’s first permanent, interactive museum of the communist period, alongside a travelling museum on wheels that will reach schools and communities across the country. Through historical facts, personal stories and the everyday choices people faced, the museum aims to help young people understand what it meant to live in a society where freedom was constrained – and why understanding this past still matters today.

Part of the long-term mission of the Sofia Platform Foundation is to transform the remains of Bulgaria’s largest communist labour camp – Belene – into a place that not only preserves the memory of the regime’s victims, but also inspires active civic engagement, critical thinking, and responsibility for the future.
