Historical City Tours this October

Throughout October, our historical tours will once again take us through Sofia, exploring different moments from the city’s communist period – from the establishment of the regime after 9 September 1944 to the social changes and protests of 1989.

The walking tour “Establishing the Regime” traces the establishment of communist rule and the changes that transformed Bulgarian society. We will talk about the cult of Georgi Dimitrov, fear and propaganda, as well as the stories of people who disappeared during the regime.

  • Starting point: Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”
  • Date and time: 3 October – 11:00-12:30

The walking tour “Following the Steps of Freedom” takes us back to Sofia in 1989 – to the sites of protests, the “City of Truth” and the first major social changes. The tour follows the places where new, free voices began to be heard.

  • Starting point: Fountain in front of the Presidential Palace
  • Date and time: 10 October – 11:00-12:30

The historic “Memory” Tram follows Sofia’s central axis and explores key sites connected to control and structures of power during the period 1944–1989. From the tram, the city takes on a different perspective, revealing stories that often remain outside the history books.

  • Starting point: “Lions’ Bridge” tram stop (towards the Central Sofia Market Hall)
  • Date and time for both tours: 25 October – 11:00 and 13:00

Participation in the tours is free of charge, but places are limited.

Registration is required.

You can register here.
