“We Are All Belene” is a small part of Sofia Platform’s wider project, "Histories from Belene". As a result of joint efforts, the Belene camp became part of the Bulgarian Tourist Union’s initiative "Explore Bulgaria – 100 National Tourist Sites" – a step that raises awareness of the place, makes it more accessible to visitors, and encourages more people to learn about its history firsthand.
Through the work of Sofia Platform, Belene is now also included in the Ministry of Education and Science’s National Programme "Bulgaria – Educational Routes", which enables students from across the country to visit it as part of their school trips. “Educational Routes” is a programme that promotes learning through experience outside the classroom. It supports schools in organizing visits to significant cultural, historical, and scientific sites.
As part of our efforts to preserve memory, we also created a permanent exhibition in the so-called Object 2 of the former camp, presenting the stories of its victims. The exhibits convey the experiences of some of the inmates through objects, personal testimonies, and an interactive screen featuring accounts of survivors.
The exhibition transforms the space into a place that invites us to reflect, remember, and safeguard freedom — and is another step toward turning the Belene camp into a true home of memory.
The “Histories from Belene” project is carried out with the support of the America for Bulgaria Foundation.
