This May, we once again invite you to join our historical tours in Sofia – a joint initiative withVisit Sofia (Municipal Enterprise "Tourism" of the Sofia Municipality).

In a month marked by numerous holidays and commemorative dates, the tours offer an opportunity for a deeper look into the city’s recent past and the legacy of the communist period.
 

Over several weekends, you will be able to explore these sites of memory through two walking historical tours, as well as travel through a different Sofia aboard the “Memory” tram.
 

The walking “Freedom” tour looks at Sofia in 1989: the protest squares, the “City of Truth,” the first free words, and the energy of hope after fear.
 

The tour “The Establishment of the Regime” traces the remnants of a totalitarian world – the coup of September 9, the cult of Georgi Dimitrov, propaganda, and the regime’s repressive apparatus embodied by the State Security.
 

The historical tram “Memory” follows Sofia’s central axis, along which key sites related to repression and the mechanisms of power during the period 1944–1989 are located.

The route along tram lines No. 12 and No. 18 passes by the buildings of the former Directorate of the People’s Militia and State Security, the Party House and the so-called “triangle of power,” the Sofia Court House, and a number of other locations marked by political processes and control. It also includes places associated with ideological censorship and restrictions on freedom of movement, as well as the emerging counterculture of the 1980s – “Popa,” “The Blue,” the first informal exhibitions, and cafés.

Participation in the tours is free of charge, but places are limited.

Walking tour “In the Footsteps of Freedom”
• May 9 – 11:00–12:30
• Starting point: Fountain in front of the Presidency

Walking tour “The Establishment of the Regime”
• May 16 – 11:00–12:30
• Starting point: Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”

“Memory” tram tours
• May 31 – 11:00 and 13:00
• Starting point: tram stop "Lion Bridge Square" (towards Central Sofia Halls)
